WATER AND SANITATION projects supported
 |
WaterAid was established in 1981 by the UK water industry to support water and sanitation projects in developing countries. WaterAid currently works in 26 countries in Africa and Asia, with a specific focus on improving sanitation, hygiene and access to clean drinking water.
In 2008, the Foundation provided WaterAid’s Nepal country programme with a grant of £175,000 to support direct project delivery, advocacy campaigns and capacity-building of the water and sanitation sector in Nepal. The major focus of the grant was for WaterAid to work in partnership with local NGO Nepal Water for Health to mobilise six rural village communities in the south east of the country using an integrated ‘water and sanitation for all’ approach. Hygiene education and support to construct household latrines has allowed the communities to be declared as Open Defecation Free, whilst the installation of tap stands and protection of water sources has allowed the community easy access to clean drinking water.

Concern Universal was established in 1976 to undertake sustainable development work in some of the most disadvantaged countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and South America. Concern Universal works closely with local partner NGOs to support access to water and sanitation, improved livelihoods and microfinance. |
In 2009, the Foundation provided Concern Universal with a grant of £100,000 to improve access to drinking water and sanitation in the arid and semi-arid Eastern Province of Kenya. Working closely with local NGO partners, Concern Universal is supporting the construction of shallow wells and VIP latrines in 15 communities, which will benefit approximately 2,600 people. Concern Universal uses a successful model of community engagement to ensure local ownership of the project activities, which significantly increases the long-term sustainability of water sources and use of latrines.
