Projects in Wales

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Although the funding priorities for TWF are the Environment and World Development, the original founders of the Foundation live and work in Wales.
Following on from our review of the needs affecting the people of Wales, we would like to see applications to the Wales’ fund in the areas of:

WORKING WALES

When the UK economy was expanding, Wales continued to be the least prosperous region of the UK, with economic activity lower than the UK average.  The recent downturn in the global economy will undoubtedly be felt more keenly, as Wales already has a high proportion of economically inactive people.  At the same time, employment levels in Wales remain stubbornly below the UK average and any cushioning effect from the high level of public sector employment is rapidly diminishing.

The Foundation is keen to support and assist in the development of an enterprise culture in Wales and so would welcome applications from organisations and projects that will facilitate people becoming employed, whether working for others or for themselves.

The jobs created by your initiative should primarily be for the beneficiary group, not within the initiative itself nor in the supporting agency.  For example, we are more likely to fund some sort of ‘jobs officer’ who helps a substantial number of others, get into work. We are less likely to fund setting up a social enterprise where there are only 3 or 4 jobs created, such as a café.

We are interested in promoting enterprise and employment across the board, including, but not limited to, groups with particular challenges in this area; such as people leaving care and/or institutions; those recovering from long term sickness; older people; disabled people; ethnic minorities, etc.
The Foundation will also look favourably on applications that address “barriers to work” and will be equally receptive to both “tried and tested” methods and those projects which are more innovative.

CARING WALES

It is estimated that 1 in 10 people in Wales is providing unpaid care for a family member, a total of some 340,000 people.  Of these, 7,000 are likely to be children aged 5 – 15 (source National Office of Statistics).  There are an estimated 90,000 people providing more than 50 hours per week unpaid care for family members.
The Foundation believes that these adults and particularly the child carers who have to live and work in this way, deserve our help.
To this end, we would like to receive applications from organisations and projects (sorry, no individuals as such) providing:

  • Advocacy programmes for Carers
  • Training and Support for Carers
  • Respite Care.

We would also like to receive applications from organisations that are helping individual carers, particularly if:

  • those carers are looking after children with the neurological problems identified in our Child Development Fund,
  • or the carers themselves are young people.
